November 9, 2008                 “26th Sunday after Pentecost”                     8:45 am

                                                                                           “Veterans Sunday”

“We are called to be an authentic and accessible community of God’s love.”

We welcome you to the celebration of good news and the fellowship of this congregation.

We hope that you will be both comforted and challenged by the Word of God for us today.

If you are worshipping here for the first time, we hope you will consider making this your church home.

We welcome the diversity of all God’s children.

SILENT MEDITATION

Little progress can be made by merely attempting to repress what is evil. Our great hope lies in developing what is good.                       -Calvin Coolidge

*WELCOME ONE ANOTHER

(Please complete the registration card found in the bulletin and place in the offering.

Prayers and comments may be written on the back of the card.)

PRAISE!

“Lead Me to the Rock”

Refrain:       Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I. (2 times)

Lead me to the Rock; lead me to the Rock of Ages.

Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.

From the ends of the earth, will I cry unto you, when my heart is overwhelmed.

You alone are my hope, my strength, and my shield. I will put my trust in you. (Refrain)

You, O Lord, are my Rock; I stand strong in you, none can turn my heart away.

In this world made of change, you’re always the same, I will put my trust in you. (Refrain)

“We Bring the Sacrifice of Praise”  FWS 2031

We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord.

We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord.

And we offer up to You the sacrifices of thanksgiving;

and we offer up to You the sacrifices of joy!

*CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:         Come to worship and follow Jesus the Christ.

People:        We come seeking life eternal.

Leader:         To find life, you must first die.

People:        We come seeking to be comforted.

Leader:         To be comforted, you give comfort to others.

People:        We come seeking ivory palaces and golden streets.

Leader:         Here you will find the cross. Take it and live.

People:        We receive our cross to bear so that we may follow Jesus.

“All That I Need”

There is one thing that I know I will do, I will be holding on to you.

And when the dark clouds come and bring down the rain,

I know that You will sustain me, Lord. (Chorus)

(Chorus) Your love is all that I need, all that I need, all that I need.

Your love is all that I need, all that I need is you.

Jesus, You know what’s inside of my heart, when I am coming apart at the seams.

But that’s when my true colors come shining through,

I know that you are the one for me. (Chorus)

“A Shield About Me”

Thou, O Lord, are a shield about me.  You’re my glory, you’re the lifter of my head.

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!  You’re the lifter of my head.

SCRIPTURE LESSON  Matthew 24:36-44 (The Message)                -Lt. Jerry Jackson (USN)

“But the exact day and hour? No one knows that, not even heaven’s angels, not even the Son. Only the Father knows. The Arrival of the Son of Man will take place in times like Noah’s. Before the great flood everyone was carrying on as usual, having a good time right up to the day Noah boarded the ark. They knew nothing—until the flood hit and swept everything away. The Son of Man’s Arrival will be like that: Two men will be working in the field—one will be taken, one left behind; two women will be grinding at the mill—one will be taken, one left behind. So stay awake, alert. You have no idea what day your master will show up. But you do know this: You know that if the homeowner had known what time of night the burglar would arrive, he would have been there with his dogs to prevent the break-in. Be vigilant just like that. You have no idea when the Son of Man is going to show up. Who here qualifies for the job of overseeing the kitchen? A person the Master can depend on to feed the workers on time each day. Someone the Master can drop in on unannounced and always find him doing his job. A God-blessed man or woman, I tell you. It won’t be long before the Master will put this person in charge of the whole operation. But if that person only looks out for himself, and the minute the Master is away does what he pleases—abusing the help and throwing drunken parties for his friends—the Master is going to show up when he least expects it and make hash of him. He’ll end up in the dump with the hypocrites, out in the cold shivering, teeth chattering.”

Leader:     This is the Word of the Lord.

People:    Thanks be to God.

“White As Snow”

White as snow, white as snow, though my sins were as scarlet;

Lord I know, Lord I know, that I’m clean and forgiven.

Through the power of Your blood, through the wonder of Your love,

through the faith in You I know that I can be white as snow.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

OUR LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,

For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

“White As Snow”

White as snow, white as snow, though my sins were as scarlet;

Lord I know, Lord I know, that I’m clean and forgiven.

Through the power of Your blood, through the wonder of Your love,

through the faith in You I know that I can be white as snow.

SCRIPTURE LESSON   1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (NRSV)            -Lt. Jerry Jackson (USN)

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Leader:     This is the Word of the Lord.

People:    Thanks be to God.
