Canine Companions for Independence

Wounded Veterans Initiative

Canine Companions for Independence is a nonprofit organization that provides highly trained service dogs free of charge to individuals with disabilities. It has provided many assistance dogs to U.S. war veterans across the country. With the increase in wounded veterans who could benefit from an assistance dog, CCI has instituted a Wounded Veterans Initiative to raise public awareness.  For veterans making a new start putting their life back together from an injury, an assistance dog can provide the help they need to regain independence. CCI does not accept any government money, instead relying on grants and donations from individuals and foundations. The organization breeds and trains its own’ dogs, Labradors, golden retrievers or lab/golden crosses. The estimated cost from breeding through training to placement and follow-up is estimated at $50,000 per dog. For more information, the website is…more
